The film industry's first home in America was NYC. But in 1910 the Biograph Co. dispatched director D.W. Griffith and a troupe of stars to LA to film scenes, attracted by the region's famously sunny climate, perfect for shooting outdoors year-round. The film industry gradually migrated to a small suburb of LA, Hollywood - where real estate speculators erected a sign with 50 ft. letters in 1923 to attract home buyers. The sign's final 4 letters were removed in 1945.
