The Astor Mansion, 65th and 5th Avenues. This mansion was built after William Waldorf Astor emigrated to England, tore down his former mansion next door to his brother-in-law William Astor's mansion and built the Waldorf Hotel. Mrs. Astor responded by tearing down her mansion and building the even larger Astoria hotel. The two hotels eventually merged to become the Waldorf Astoria. Mrs. Astor moved to this mansion farther uptown.
