GRANDSON OF QUEEN VICTORIA and Albert: Alfred, Hereditary Prince of Saxe-Coburg and Gotha (1874 – 1899), was the only son of Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh, who in turn was the second oldest son of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. In 1898, Alfred had begun exhibiting severe symptoms of syphilis he had acquired while a Guards officer. He shot himself on January 22, 1899 and died two weeks later at the age of 24. He never married and had no children.
