November 17, 1950: Tenzin Gyatso, fifteen, is recognized as the 14th Dalai Lama, the spiritual and political leader of the Tibetan people. China invades Tibet that year, and in 1959 the Dalai Lama is one of 80,000 who flee the country following a failed uprising. He establishes a government-in-exile in northern India and works to secure self-rule for Tibet through non-violent means.
