Prince John of York, youngest son of King George V and Queen Mary. An epileptic, he was sent to live in his own household, Wood Farm, on the royal Sandringham Estate when he was 12. He was accompanied by his devoted nanny, Charlotte Bill, called Lalla. John became close friends with Winifred Thomas, an asthmatic girl whose uncle was the riding master at Sandringham. John's condition worsened and he died on 18 January, 1919. He was 13 years old.
