ELIZABETH I OF ENGLAND (1533-1603) was the last monarch of the Tudor dynasty, never marrying to avoid losing power to a man. Her mother was murdered by the crazy Henry VIII when Elizabeth was only 2, and Elizabeth was later imprisoned by another of Henry's heirs for a year before she achieved the throne. As a woman who was forbidden to personally lead armies, Elizabeth had to rule through her ministers, more like modern heads of state, a situation which proved very successful.
