Robert W. Simmons, politician a pioneer in black education, born 1822 VA.1862 he took the lead and found the Sumner School, a private school for the town’s blacks. Housed in an army barrack. Simmons, on horseback,made a long and dangerous war-time trip to Washington, where he secured the building directly from President Lincoln. It is West Virginia’s earliest black public school in 1866-later named after abolitionist Sen.Sumner, In the 1980's it became a museum, The Sumnerite.

In 1937 a stone with several lines of inscription carved into it was found by Louis Hammond, a tourist from California, while looking for hickory nuts off U.S. 17. He found the stone in the woods about 65 miles west of Roanoke Island. Seemingly carved at the behest of Eleanor White Dare, daughter of Governor White, it told of a horrific Indian attack in 1591 that wiped out most of the Lost Colony, including Virginia Dare, first English child born in North America.

The sword of Godfrey of Bouillon on display in the Church of the Holy Sepulchre in Jerusalem. Godfrey was a medieval Frankish knight who was one of the leaders of the First Crusade from 1096 until his death. Godfrey became the first ruler of the Kingdom of Jerusalem, although he refused the title "King"; he believed that the true King of Jerusalem is Christ. The size of this sword is awesome. Try to think of fighting for a full day by wielding this weapon with one hand.
