Kate Chase Sprague ca. 1855-65. She was the daughter of Salmon P. Chase, Secretary of the Treasury in Lincoln's cabinet and later Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. She was the belle of Washington until her marriage in 1863 to a wealthy senator. The marriage ended when Sprague discovered her in bed with Sen. Roscoe Conkling, a very powerful political boss in New York. He divorced her and she died, impoverished, at 58.
