Voyages by Captain Cook: 1st voyage RED (1768–71) Promoted to lieutenant and named as commander of the expedition the Royal Society engaged Cook to travel to the Pacific to observe and record the transit of Venus across the Sun. 2nd voyage GREEN (1772–75) promoted in 1771 to Commander, then in 1772 he was commissioned by the Royal Society to search for the hypothetical Terra Australis. 3rd voyage BLUE (1776–79) Principally the voyage was an attempt to discover the famed Northwest Passage.
